FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Contact us and we’ll respond within 24 hours to schedule a site visit. After evaluating the property and discussing your goals, we’ll provide a detailed estimate within 1–5 business days. With your approval, we’ll order materials, have the underground utilities located and marked, and put your fencing project on our installation list and start the installation as soon as your project gets to the top.

Timelines vary depending on the size and complexity of the job, material availability, and weather conditions. Once we begin, we work every available day until your fence is finished.

Yes. Property owners are responsible for locating their corner monuments. If you’re unsure, we recommend hiring a licensed surveyor to confirm boundary lines before installation begins.

South Shore Fence Company does not obtain permits or HOA authorizations. It is the property owner’s responsibility to make sure their project is in compliance with all city, county, and HOA regulations. The city of South Lake Tahoe, and El Dorado County, do not require permits for fences, but height and setback requirements still apply.

We serve all California locations in South Lake Tahoe, the West Slope, and most parts of El Dorado County. We do not service Nevada.

Typically, steel fencing will last longer; however, heavy snow loads can take its toll, causing it to bend or stretch. Wood fencing gives you more privacy and holds up well against heavy snow loads, but wood posts may eventually rot, causing the fence to lean or fall. Substituting steel posts in a wood fence gives you the best of both worlds.

Fence heights vary. Ornamental fencing around gardens may be as low as two feet, while tennis court fences can reach twelve feet. Most backyard fences are six feet tall. Front yard fences are usually three to four feet. If you live in a snow-prone area, consider that deep snow can reduce your fence’s effective height, making it easier for pets to escape or wildlife to enter.

City and County codes are generally similar. In the city, side and back yard fences may be up to six feet tall. Front yard fences can only be 3 feet tall within the 20’ setback zone. In the county, side, back yard, and front yard fences may be up to seven feet tall with front yard restrictions on corner lots and driveway entrances for vehicle sight safety.

If the fence is built centered on a shared property line, both parties have equal say regarding style, height, and materials, and can paint, stain, or personalize their side as desired, regardless of who pays for the fence. If the fence is built entirely on their property, and they entirely pay for the fence, you don’t have legal input regarding its style, height, or material, and you cannot paint, stain, or personalize your side without their approval. That said, open communication can go a long way—discussing it together beforehand can often lead to a solution that works for both parties.
